Richmond’s Own Maymont Makes List of Top 10 Public Spaces
October 5th, 2011On Tuesday, October 4, the American Planning Association announced its list of 2011 Great Places. The American Planning Association brings together thousands of people — practicing planners, citizens, elected officials — committed to making great communities happen through a professional institute for certified planners and through divisions and chapters as well as student memberships. And, the APA identified Maymont as one of America’s 10 Great Public Spaces in 2011.
What is a public space?
A public space, as defined by the APA, can be a gathering spot or part of a neighborhood, downtown, special district, waterfront or other area within the public realm that helps promote social interaction and a sense of community. Possible examples may include such spaces as plazas, town squares, parks, marketplaces, public commons and malls, public greens, piers, special areas within convention centers or grounds, sites within public buildings, lobbies, concourses, or public spaces within private buildings.
Maymont, of course, is Richmond’s own 100-acre estate near downtown, now a city park with free admission featuring gorgeous gardens, wildlife exhibits, and open spaces perfect to romp and play.
Why stay at a Bed and Breakfast?
September 28th, 2011Recently one of our guests posted a review that we think defines the reasons a traveler should consider a bed and breakfast as an alternative to a hotel – especially here in Richmond, VA.

Suitcase packed and ready to go! Here's why you should stay at Richmond's premier bed and breakfast!
The reviewer is a traveler who normally prefers to stay at bed and breakfasts, but the comments may pique the interest of a usual hotel guest and entice him/her to give a bed and breakfast a try. After traveling for 20 years and experiencing a wide variety of lodging options, this reviewer has developed a practiced and critical eye to judge those features and those amenities that mean the most. Richmond’s own premier bed and breakfast in the historic Fan District seems to have hit the target!
Let’s take a look at her bed and breakfast experience in her own words.
The Richmond Folk Festival is Coming
September 26th, 2011Downtown Richmond Virginia’s fab free three-day festival on the riverfront opens October 14 and runs through October 16, 2011. The final performers were announced last Thursday and include Original P (a funk band), Los Tres Reyes from San Antonio with their Spanish romantic music, Tibetan sacred music and dance by Tibetan Monks from Drepung Loseling Monastery in India, Circleville Ohio banjo musicians Tony Ellis and the Musicians of Braeburn and traditional Irish music by the Old Bay Ceili Band of Baltimore. This annual festival, now in its fourth year, will feature over 20 performers and performing acts on seven stages throughout the weekend. SCHEDULE. Most of the performers are new to Richmond this year, so this is not a repeat of previous year’s lineup! And, though you will be able to find typical festival food, this year’s food vendors can take your tastebuds on a trip around the world with traditional foods running the gamut from Thai, Indian, Mexican, Italian to southern delectables like Cajun.
One of Virginia’s largest and most-loved events, The Richmond Folk Festival finds its roots in the National Folk Festival, held in Richmond in 2005, 2006, and 2007. Richmond’s residents and visitors loved the riverfront festival along Tredegar and on Brown’s Island so much that when the National Folk Festival moved on, the Richmond Folk Festival was born and continues to get bigger and better each and every year. Last year more than 190,000 folks visited the Richmond Folk Festival. This year’s event promises to explore and celebrate the roots of the rich and diverse culture that we know as American culture through dance, music, crafts and food – to the delight of the entire family. Make plans to attend now! You don’t want to miss it.
